When you hear the word garden what do you envision? The Queen’s red roses? An overgrown and wild secret hidden by time? Famer McGregor’s vegetable patch? Childhood tales illustrate what represents a garden in our mind's eye and evoke an air of wistful magic. Gardens are an uplifting reminder of the beauty and singularity of our world. In exploration, surveyors are held captive by an Elysium where time and thought are lost.
Chippy Chick Julie’s mountain cottage has a relaxed vibe with natural flora and fauna on her doorstep. In the morning, she enjoys coffee on her front patio under a pergola dressed with cascading foliage and hanging Boston ferns. Maggie, her family’s gray cat rolls in beds of cosmos, zinnias, and snapdragons. A perfect space for dreamers, the fresh mountain air offers meditative tranquility and affords peace to savor the moment. Julie's love of the nature rooted by her parents, Stella and Richard have a transcendental view of the environment. Richard, Julie, and her brother John completed the Scranton half marathon together, and Stella and Richard tend their garden—they’ve kept active enjoying the outdoors as a family.
The first incarnation of Stella and Richard’s garden was a potager—a French kitchen garden with vegetables, herbs, and edible flowers. Over the years their garden has grown into a gorgeous sprawl across half-an-acre. Mid-summer WNEP contacted Chippy White Table to film a segment for their Home & Backyard series. The splendor of Stella and her husband Richard’s garden in the shadow of Endless Mountains embodies why our region is so special; a dreamscape idyllic for inspiration making it the perfect location to host Jackie Lewandoski and her team.
The day before WNEP visited, at the Chippy shop, we packed our goblets and a collection of pocket watches from Stella’s father—Julie’s grandfather—and brass animals too. With everything wrapped tightly, we loaded the van parallel parked in front of Twigs restaurant. Patrons dining in the front windows watched as we lifted Paige, more than double our size into the back of the van. On the way through town, Julie passed by the T-Town Twirlers throwing their batons in the air as they performed for the seniors on the Methodist Manor’s front lawn. The small girls wore sequined one-pieces and white majorette boots with fringe and even on a warm July day, some members of the audience had knit blankets draped over their laps.
When Julie pulled into Stella’s driveway, she leaned out the van window to make sure the wheels did not ramp the basketball hoop’s base. She cranked the truck into park and hopped down from her seat. Stella’s dog Harry, an old Chocolate Lab who resembles a Red Panda greeted Julie with his long tongue and wagging white spotted tail. Inside, Stella was in the kitchen shining cutlery.

The backyard was rural paradise as the summer breeze swept through tall shrubs. For the segment, we created three vignettes for entertaining. On Paige, patterned dinnerware and metallic cutlery complimented layered floral textures; the saccharine, pink lilies and peppermint roses arranged by Monzie’s Floral Design. Intricate embellishments used to dress Pam added sweet details, perfect for inspiration as we walked Jackie through our approach to styling. Chippy Chick Libby braided flowers through macramé, the installation suspended from an arbor Richard built using raw branches. Goldie’s bright apricot upholstery popped against the verdant greenery.
Kandice Bross captured sweet moments of happiness during her Secret Garden mini-session. Stella and Richard’s garden is an ideal place to take photos; the elements paid homage to memories—their backyard was where their children and friends gathered to take pictures before school dances.
The gorgeous honeyed-light blossomed over the picturesque landscape.
